About Maurice CHEONG
Maurice is a Partner in the Intellectual Property Department.
Maurice graduated from the University of London in 1995, and was admitted as a Barrister-at-Law of the English Bar in 1996. He was called to the Singapore Bar in 1998. He obtained a Master of Laws from the National University of Singapore in 2003 in which his major was in Biomedical Law & Ethics. He joined the firm in 2008.
Since commencing practice in 1998, Maurice has handled a wide range of work, including the following:-
Intellectual Property
- Advising, drafting, reviewing and negotiating Intellectual Property / Information Technology related documents including licensing, assignment, co-existence agreements, technology transfer, commercial and businesses transaction documents. Clients include international companies dealing in fast moving consumer goods, leading fashion designers, pharmaceutical companies, IT companies and government agencies.
- Handling court proceedings in trade mark, copyright, patent, passing off, confidential information and IT disputes.
- Acting on behalf of the Public Prosecutor in the prosecution of criminal offences under the Copyright Act and Trade Marks Act.
- Acting in contentious trademark matters including opposition, cancellation/invalidation proceedings conducted at the Intellectual Property Office of Singapore.
Medical Malpractice
- Being one of the panel lawyers of Medical Protection Society of UK, Maurice has provided legal advice and assistance to member doctors in Singapore concerning their professional conduct and ethic issues.
- Defending doctors in civil proceedings arising from allegations against doctors for breach of professional duties.
- Successfully defended a doctor in a criminal trial arising from an allegation that the doctor assaulted the patient.
- Acting and advising doctors in Coroner’s Inquiry, including hearings where doctors were named as ‘potential defendants’.
- Representing doctors in numerous Singapore Medical Council Disciplinary Committee Inquiry involving charges of improper act or conduct in relation to over prescription of benzodiazepines and/or buprenorphine, gross negligence causing death, and also defending charges in respect of conviction which imply a defect in character.
Matrimonial Proceedings
- Acting in numerous heavily contested matrimonial proceedings touching on disputed division of matrimonial assets valued at more than S$10 million.
General Litigation
- Representing litigants in contract, commercial and corporate disputes.
- Representing one of the foreign beneficiaries in a contested probate case involving bank accounts in Singapore, Hong Kong and Europe with an estimated value of US$50 million.
